Just like marriage, your relationship with your contractor will only be as good as your communication with each other. Remodeling and renovation are collaborative efforts between the homeowner and the contractor.
Don’t be penny wise and pound foolish. Compare more than price. Of course, the bottom line is a substantial factor in deciding who’s going to get your job. But it shouldn’t be the only one. A good rule of thumb is to get at least three bids, and require that each has a breakdown of materials used for the project. This will allow you to compare whether all things are equal, or if the quality of materials differs between bids. If one is considerably lower, than it’s likley that the workmanship or materials used are of lesser quality. Always remember: If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
How long has the contractor been in business? Ask about their years in the field and the age of their company. It’s important to know their level of experience, as well as the stability of their business. Hiring someone who has at least five-to-ten years experience is recommended.
Do they have a place of business? The best way of knowing if your contractor actually has an established business is usually determined if they have a receptionist answering the phones. This is very important for you to always have access to your contractor. It also shows that this company is more than likely successful.
Feel comfortable communicating. If you can’t talk to your contractor and share ideas and concerns, than the relationship can quickly turn complicated. Your contractor should make you as much a part of the process as you would like without impending the process. It’s very important to have a line of communication available to prevent hard feelings and unrealistic expectations.
Does your contractor offer warranties? Check on the type of warranties a contractor is offering. If they are confident in giving you a great job they should be confident enough to give you a warranty.
Does your contractor have references? Don’t be afraid to ask your contractor for references. Just because they have a book full of beautiful pictures or a website you should always take the time to actually see one of their jobs in person. A good company has only confidence to gain if a customer decides to check on a job first hand.
